About the Poison Control Hotline

Telephone advice for all citizens

The Poison Control Hotline is a telephone service offering immediate guidance for poisoning emergencies to all Danes. Nurses and doctors who are certified in Poison Information man the phones 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

When you call us, please state your name, social security number and telephone number to enable us to call back if needed. However, if it is important to you, you may stay anonymous. The service area of the Poison Control Hotline covers Denmark, the Faroe Islands, Greenland and Danish ships.

Specific hotline for health personnel

The Poison Control Hotline offers guidance for treatment of poisonings to doctors, nurses and other health personnel. Their questions are often of a different nature than those asked by other citizens. Therefore, the Poison Control Hotline has a specific telephone number for health personnel. This number is restricted to professionals only, and it is available on the website www.sundhed.dk.

Prevention and research

The Poison Control Hotline’s special knowledge about poisoning is used to detect and identify hazardous products and situations which may pose a particular risk of poisoning. The Poison Control Hotline has an active surveillance programme and makes contact with distributors or regulatory authorities when situations call for it. Moreover, some of our primary responsibilities are to undertake research and development within the field of poisoning (clinical toxicology), to provide education, to assist in cases of poisoning emergencies and to provide guidance and advice to authorities.

Partners and associates:

The Poison Control Hotline co-operates with a vast number of relevant organisations and authorities both in Denmark and in Europe and in the US. In particular, we work closely with the Poison Control Centres in the other Nordic countries and we arrange joint annual meetings and regular training courses in clinical toxicology for Scandinavian doctors.
